Air Travel — Oaxaca
Most travelers flying to Oaxaca connect through México City. There, they transfer either to Mexicana or to Aeroméxico, before flying non-stop to one of state's three airports — Oaxaca City, Huatulco, or Puerto Escondido.
Continental is the only carrier that flies non-stop to Oaxaca from abroad, with several flights a week from Houston to the cities of Oaxaca and Bahías de Huatulco.
Travelers from Southern California have the option of crossing the border and flying from Tijuana non-stop to the city of Oaxaca four times a week with the low-cost Mexican carrier Volaris.
The airport in Toluca, located about 30 miles (50km) west of México City, with many connections throughout México, is emerging as an alternative hub to the busy México City airport for domestic and international flights. Unfortunately, for Oaxaca-bound travelers, there are no non-stop flights to the state from this airport, and thus, no benefit in connecting through it.
The Oaxaca City airport is by far the busiest in the state; consequently, its domestic and international fares are generally the lowest. Anyone planning an extended trip around the state of Oaxaca, or even southern México, should consider starting her trip from there.
For travelers planning on going directly to Huatulco or Puerto Ángel, or any of the nearby beach towns, and spending all their time there, the Huatulco airport, with many more flight options and generally much better airfares, is preferable to Puerto Escondido.
And lastly, with only 1-2 flights a day from México City, Puerto Escondido usually has the most expensive airfares of the lot for routes from abroad. Paying this premium only makes sense for travelers planning on spending all their time in and around Puerto Escondido. Budget travelers should consider flying to Huatulco and taking one of the many second-class buses that run west along Highway 200 to Puerto Escondido; they're inexpensive and the trip is only about 100km (60 miles). Now, for travelers already in México, reasonable airfares to Puerto Escondido are possible, depending on the route.
